About Goths

Goth History
·      Being a Goth is not just a novel out of the ordinary, its existed for a long time.
·      Not strictly a western phenomenon.
·      Goth referred to Germanic tribe who conquered and controlled much of Europe in the Middle Ages.
·      Style of art and architecture.
·      Only Goths understood their jokes and they where the only ones who found them funny.
·      It’s a contrast between good, evil, death and struggle between purity and decadence.
·      Early 19th century artistic movement called Romanticism arose; focused around fantastical themes, good, evil, sensuality and death.
·      Goth is pretty much here to stay simply because its been around since the Middle Ages and is still going on in the world today.



Goth Values
·      Dark sense of humor.
·      Very high brow values; enjoy poetry, books, and art.
·      Wearing dark clothing, sharp jewelry, piercings, and hair.



Goth Symbols
·      Music~ gothic rock, death rock, post~punk, dark wave.
·      Silver and pewter jewelry to compliment their outfits.
·      Some worn upside down for reversal meaning.
·      Bone Ankh.

Language used by Gothics:

 Gothic language is an extinct Germanic language, which arose from a 6th-century copy of a 4th-century bible translation.

How the Gothic Culture has influenced mainstream society:

-       The gothic culture has survived longer than others and still continues to diversify and spread to other countries. Today Gothic tastes and preferences differ significantly however, this subculture remains stronger than others.
-       Goths contributed to music being spread throughout Britain leading to many teenagers adopting the sounds and styles of the gothic culture
-       18th and 19th century gothic and horror literature became a culture using dark eyeliner and dressing in all black
-       1960s “The Addams Family” and other TV shows portrayed symbolic images and scenes to describe the Goth culture.
-       Gothic Culture influenced many artists such as Anne Sudworth who emphasized erotic and romantic pictures that had vampires or ghost with dark colors and sentiments to show the dark side in being gothic.
